Can You Be Inconvenienced for a Day?

A friend of mine, who is a single mom, had her car unexpectedly burn up—leaving her without a way to get her children to childcare and herself to work. She works long hours, from 2 PM to 2 AM, and suddenly she had no transportation and no solution.

I started thinking about what it really means to follow Jesus in the everyday, ordinary moments. As a Jesus follower, I believe that everything I own is really a gift from God—on loan for me to steward. My car isn’t my car. My home isn’t my home. My time isn’t fully my time. God has allowed me to enjoy these things, but ultimately, He owns everything.

That day, I only had one commitment on my schedule. I reached out and asked if the person could pick me up instead. They could. That meant the car was free—so I offered it to my friend.

Because of that small decision, she didn’t have to rent a car. It saved her around $60, but even more than that, it saved her the stress, the time, and the discouragement of trying to solve another problem on top of all the others weighing on her.

Was it inconvenient? A little.
Was it love? Absolutely.

Back in the 1960s, the question was: “What Would Jesus Do?”
In the 2020s, maybe it’s time to shift that:
Let’s just do what Jesus would do.

Let people borrow your “stuff.”
Let God use what He has placed in your hands.

After all—it’s only stuff.

One of the best ways to build this habit is to model it in everyday life. For example, when you run out of sugar, instead of heading straight to the store, walk next door and ask if you can borrow a cup from your neighbor. It seems simple, even old-fashioned, but it opens the door to connection. It gives others the joy of helping, and it reminds all of us that community still matters—that we need one another in small ways just as much as in big ones.

And sometimes, the smallest inconvenience becomes the biggest blessing in someone else’s life.
