When we think about growth, we often picture what we can see. The tree stretching upward, the branches expanding, the fruit appearing. But long before anything is visible, something powerful is happening beneath the surface.
The soil. The soil reminds us that growth is often unseen, messy, and slow, but absolutely necessary. It’s in the soil where transformation begins. It’s where seeds are broken open, roots push through resistance, and life quietly takes hold.
In our own lives, the “soil seasons” can feel uncomfortable. They may look like waiting, stretching, or even breaking. But these are not wasted moments, they are where God is doing His deepest work.
Jesus tells a powerful story about soil in The Bible, specifically in Matthew 13, the Parable of the Sower. In this story, seeds fall on different types of ground:
This parable isn’t just about farming—it’s about the condition of our hearts. What are we watching, hearing, spending our time on? How much time daily are you spending on your phone?
We can have the right seed (God’s truth, calling, purpose), but if the soil isn’t ready, growth will struggle.
That’s why tending the soil matters.
God invites us to cultivate good soil—a heart that is open, rooted, and ready.
In a world that celebrates quick outcomes and visible success, God often works in the opposite way. He builds roots before results. Roots are hidden. No one applauds them. No one sees them forming. But they are essential. Without strong roots:
Spiritually, roots are formed through:
What feels like “nothing happening” may actually be the most important season of your life. Because deep roots create lasting impact.
Soil is not neat. It’s not polished. It’s not glamorous. It’s dirt. And yet, God chooses dirt as the place where life begins. There is something incredibly freeing in that truth. You don’t have to have everything perfectly together for God to grow something beautiful in your life. In fact, He often does His best work in the middle of our mess.
The question isn’t, “Is my life perfect?”
The question is, “Am I willing to stay planted?”
Because when we remain planted—even in hard, confusing, or messy seasons—God is faithful to bring growth in His timing.
Healthy growth doesn’t start with what’s visible—it starts with what’s planted and rooted. Your current season may feel hidden, but it is not insignificant. God is forming something in you that will sustain what He wants to do through you.

This week, take time to tend your soil:
Remember: roots are forming, even when results aren’t visible.
